Why I’m making 2020 a ‘Fearless’ year!

Do you choose a “Word for the year”? I haven’t in the past, but towards the end of 2019 my accountability partner brought up the idea in one of our weekly sessions.

By having one word that I can focus on throughout a whole 365 days (well 366 this year!) I’m hoping I may be inspired and motivated to create positive changes in my business and personal life.

So what word do you choose? I tried to be ‘clever’ and searched key and trending words on social media, Google etc. but one word kept popping into my head… fearless! I’ve never been an overly confident person, I tend to shy away from situations where I have to speak to strangers. Yes, I used to be a teacher, but standing in front of a classroom of children speaking about a topic I knew like the back of my hand, I was in my comfort zone.

Fast forward to starting a small business and then realising that many people wanted to see the face behind a brand. I had to learn to put myself out there. Although my confidence has grown over time, facing my own body issues of eczema flare ups and weight fluctuations, I even posted a photo of myself in a swimming costume! I do still have trouble speaking in public though. I can’t tell you how many takes I need to do for an Instagram story! But my anxiety holds me back in so many circumstances.

I also overthink things sometimes and the older I have become the more I’ve allowed the risks of an experience to discourage me from doing something.

So here I am, in the first week of 2020! I’ve even had the word 'Fearless’ printed and framed on my wall so that I can be reminded every day that I need to put myself out there! I once heard a quote “You fail 100% of the risks you don’t take” perhaps that can be my tag line for the year too?

It wasn’t that long after I decided to stick with my ‘Fearless’ word that I was asked to speak at an event in Cardiff in February… well with my committed term at the front of my mind, I couldn't say “No” could I? I’ll let you know how I get on! Eeeek!

I’d love to know if you have chosen a word of the year and why you chose it?

Happy New Year!
